Surf and Yoga in Morocco: Retreat, or the Smart DIY Way
Surf and yoga in Morocco, honestly priced: what packaged retreats cost, our €20 beach yoga session, and how to build your own surf + yoga week in Tamraght.
· 3 min
If you've typed "surf and yoga Morocco" into a search bar, you've seen the retreats: ocean-view shalas, sunrise-to-sunset programs, weeks from €900 up. This guide lays out both honest ways to combine the two practices on this coast — the packaged retreat, and the session-based version we run at our hostel in Tamraght. Full disclosure: we sell the second one, and the numbers for both are below.
The two formulas, compared honestly
| Packaged retreat | Session-based (ours) | |
|---|---|---|
| Week price | often €900+ | ~€660 (€540 surf pack + 6 × €20 sessions) |
| Program | fixed, everything organised | flexible — swell decides the surf, the teacher schedules the yoga |
| Yoga | 1–2 daily classes included | guided €20 session, when scheduled |
| Best for | wanting it all handled | wanting freedom and a controlled budget |
Neither is a scam. A retreat buys structure; the session formula buys freedom. What follows is the version we know from the inside.
Our beach yoga session, exactly
The facts, as they stand on the activity page:
- €20 per person, about an hour
- Guided by a certified yoga teacher
- On the beach, facing the ocean — the waves are part of the soundtrack
- Mats provided
- Open to beginners and experienced yogis: breathing, gentle mobility, stretching, balance, and a closing relaxation and meditation
And the part the brochures skip, said plainly: there is no fixed timetable carved in stone. Sessions are scheduled by the teacher — mornings to start the day, or late afternoon to close it — and guests join in. Less rigid than a retreat; that's the point.
Building your own surf + yoga week
The recipe our guests assemble themselves:
- A surf pack — daily lessons, gear, transfers to the spots, your room, homemade breakfasts and lunches: €250 for 2 nights, €540 for 6
- A €20 yoga session per day — roughly €660 for the full week, surf and yoga included
- The swell decides the surf sessions; yoga bookends the day — mobility in the morning, unwinding in the evening
The result looks a lot like a retreat: ocean in the morning, mat at sunset, shared meals, a rooftop. It just doesn't carry the retreat price — or the fixed program.
What a combined day can look like
No two days are identical — that's the design — but a typical rhythm goes:
- Morning: surf lesson on the beginner beach, or a point session if you've earned it
- Midday: homemade lunch back at the hostel; nap optional but traditional
- Afternoon: free — village cafés, the rooftop, or a second surf
- Golden hour: yoga on the beach when the teacher has a session scheduled, sunset included at no extra charge
- Tuesday: the rooftop jam session takes over the evening
Season-wise, winter is prime for both practices: the swell is at its most consistent and the air stays mild enough for beach yoga all season. Summer trades wave size for warmth — gentler surf, warmer evenings on the mat.
Why the two practices actually pair
No mysticism required: surfing loads your shoulders, neck and lower back — the paddling, mostly — and yoga gives them back to you for the next day. Balance built on the mat shows up on the board; steady breathing helps when a set lands on your head. That's it, and it's plenty.
Book it, or just ask
If the session formula sounds like you, build your trip here — surf pack first, yoga sessions added on the spot around the teacher's schedule. Frequently asked questions
- How much does a surf and yoga retreat in Morocco cost?
- Packaged week-long retreats — fixed program, daily classes, ocean-view shala — sit at the top of the market, often €900 and up. The session-based version exists too: our 6-night surf pack (€540) plus a €20 yoga session per day comes to roughly €660 for the week.
- How much is a beach yoga session?
- At Azul Berg in Tamraght: €20 per person for about an hour, guided by a certified yoga teacher, mats provided, right on the beach facing the ocean. Open to complete beginners and experienced practitioners alike.
- Do I need yoga or surf experience?
- Neither. The yoga session adapts to complete beginners, and surf lessons run on soft, sandy beaches with certified instructors and all gear included.
- Do the yoga sessions run on a fixed schedule?
- No — honestly: sessions are scheduled by the teacher and guests join in. That's the nature of the session-based formula: more flexibility, less structure than a retreat.
